Side Effects When Stopping Taurine

While side effects are often associated with beginning a supplement regimen, you may also experience side effects when you stop taking a supplement. If you e taking the amino acid taurine, you may notice certain changes in your health when you stop using it. Taurine is sold as a nutrition enhancer supplement and is also found in energy drinks and other products.

Taurine is an amino acid, a structural component of protein. Taurine is a nonessential amino acid, which means your body can produce taurine, unlike some other amino acids. Taurine aids in managing the amount of certain substances in your blood and is involved in nerve development. Taurine is found in protein-rich foods, particularly meat and fish.

Reduced Testosterone Levels
In addition to acting as structural components for protein and muscle tissue, amino acids are involved in enzyme and hormone production. According to research published in the June 2010 issue of the research journal "Amino Acids," increased taurine intake promotes higher levels of testosterone. Thus, you may find that your testosterone levels drop when you stop taking the supplement. Decreased levels of testosterone can cause increased body fat, reduced amounts of muscle and feelings of fatigue.

Reduced Endurance
Many supplements are available that can improve athletic performance -- protein powders and caffeine, for example -- and research indicates that taurine is another beneficial supplement for athletes. A study published in the June 2002 edition of "Amino Acids" found that taurine supplementation improved endurance in running by maintaining amino acid levels in your muscles. If you stop taking taurine, the amino acid levels in your muscle may deplete more quickly, leading to a decline in endurance.

Increased Obesity Risk
Research published in the July 2006 issue of "Endorcinology" indicates that taurine can increase daily calorie burning and prevent fat gain, even without exercise. If you rely on taurine to promote exercise intensity, the quality of your workouts may suffer when you stop using taurine, so you may end up burning fewer calories during your sessions, which can be detrimental for weight management.
